Athletes and members of the Nautical Club of Thessaloniki (NCTh) have the pleasure to host the 470 Junior World Championships of this year and to welcome you in June 2009. NCTh has existed since 1931. Its activities started with rowing and have included sailing since the 1950’s. The club quickly came to be considered one of the most active and successful nautical associations in Greece representing the country both in international races and in Olympic Games. NCTh athletes won European and World Championships. Since 2000 one of its 470 crews is considered Olympic winner. For decades, NCTh is being involved in the organization of national and international events, both in rowing, dinghy and offshore sailing and recently hosted Open European Championships for 470 and Tornado. Today, the athletes of the Nautical Club of Thessaloniki sail OPTIMIST, 420, 470, LASER and TORNADO.
The town of Thessaloniki was founded in 316 BC by ancient king Kassandros and carries the name of Alexander the Great’s stepsister. For centuries, Thessaloniki was the crossroads of nations having attracted many foreign rule thus establishing an international character by sustaining the coexistence of diverse civilizations, religions and cultures. Today, as we entered the 21st century, Thessaloniki as Greece’s second large city has become the headquarters of many organizations and institutions involved in the reconstruction and future development of the Balkans. Due to its innumerable Byzantine monuments and churches, the magnificent findings from the royal tombs of ancient Vergina, the famouw national theater, its outstanding cuisine, intensive night-life and closeness to the superb beaches of Halkidiki, modern Thessaloniki is also an attractive point for tourism in Greece.
Since the 1960’s, NCTh premises are situated in Kalamaria, region in the eastern part of Thessaloniki which in the ‘50es has become one of the independent municipalities of major Thessaloniki. Settled by refugees from Asia Minor in the beginning of the last century, Kalamaria is considered one of the most attractive departments of Thessaloniki. Opposite to Kalamaria’s huge coastline with nautical clubs, Thessaloniki’s yacht marina and it’s traditional beach, everybody can admire marvelous sunsets and majestic mount Olympus, the residence of ancient Greek gods.
